SEIICHI YASHIRO playwright


Born in Tokyo in 1927. Graduated from the French Literature Department of Waseda University. As a student he translated Moliere’s Les Femmes savantes as a member of the staff of the literature division of the Haiyu-za troupe. In 1954 he transferred to the Bungaku-za troupe by the invitation from Hiroshi Akutagawa. He established himself as a playwright with his works 'Shiro'(Castle)and 'Esugata nyobo'(Potrait of a wife). Later on he left the Bungaku-za and became a freelance playwright. He published his play such as 'Miyagino'and 'Yoake ni kieta'(Disappeared at dawn)during this period. He was awarded the 1971 Yomiuri Literature Prize for his 'Sharaku ko'(A study of Sharaku), which was followed by 'Hokusai manga'(Hokusai sketchbook)and 'Inransai Eisen'(Licenntious Eisai), constituting his“ukiyoe artist” trilogy. He was awarded the 1st Kishida Drama Award, Kinokuniya Drama Award, Minister of Education Award at the 1977 Arts Festival. Died in January 1998.
